National Donut Day – My Top 3 Favorite KC Donut Shops

I’m back, baby. My apologies for ghosting on all five of my readers. I took a lil three year hiatus from the blogosphere to get my MBA so that I could come back here and keep writing about food, but with more student debt than before. But now that that’s done, I have more free time for things like hobbies and joy. And is there anything more purely joyful than a donut? I don’t think so, which is why I carefully staged my comeback to celebrate National Donut Day with three of the places that I think do ‘em best in Kansas City.

M&M Bakery and Deli

I always knew M&M would be something special; we share the same initials, after all. You’ll find this brightly painted lime green spot on the corner of 31st Street and Woodland Ave, where they’ve been serving up tasty pastries and impressive deli sandwiches since 1985. That hot chunk o’dough pictured above is the apple fritter, and quite possibly the best I’ve ever had. It’s almost certainly larger than my head, but it doesn’t sacrifice quality for quantity. It was evenly fried for a delicious outer crunch, with a soft delicious texture inside interspersed with large bits of apple. The rest of the box also delivered. The regular glazed and its twist counterpart embodied that perfect melt-in-your-mouth sugary lightness that sticks not only to your fingers, but also somewhere deep in your brain. I recommend ordering online in advance for pick up, not just for the convenience, but also because they tend to sell out quick.

Fairway Creamery

As one of the more recent arrivals to the donut scene, Fairway Creamery has been crafting sweet treats (including very good ice cream) just off Mission Road for the past two years. Founded by renowned Kansas City chocolatier, Christopher Elbow, you’ll find the same delightfully surprising flavor creations and attention to detail as you would at his chocolate shop downtown. The little number pictured in the front left of the box is the Everything Seasoned Cream Cheese Filled, a yeast donut full of cream cheese and topped with everything bagel seasoning. While my deepest, darkest secret is that I’m not a particularly big fan of filled donuts, this one was good, and I enjoyed the savory take (though it is a LOT of cream cheese, in case that’s not your thing). The Strawberry Sprinkle and Buttermilk Orange Pistachio Glazed cake donuts were wonderful, as well. Fairway Creamery also currently allows you to order online in advance.

LaMar’s Donuts & Coffee

You just can’t do a donut round up without including LaMar’s Donuts & Coffee. A KC metro staple since 1960, LaMar’s now has 26 stores in five states. Although, I may be a bit biased because I am actually a long distant relative of Ray Lamar himself (according to the family lore, he married my great-grandma’s sister). Familial ties aside, I grew up on LaMar’s, as it was the only place to get such a mouth-watering confection in my hometown of Blue Springs, MO. To this day, it holds a special place in my heart, and I have many fond memories of piling into the car with the fam on a weekend morning and running into the shop to point my pudgy finger at sweets through a very fingerprinted glass. Back in the day, I was all about the Chocolate Iced LaMar’s Bar because, of course, I had to choose the donut that would get me the most square footage. But now my most-craved is the Blueberry Cake. My salivary glands are getting all worked up just typing about it.

I know there’s lots of other great, fluffy donuts around town, especially if you’re willing to drive a bit further, so let me know your favorites in the comments!
